ITIs now accepting 90 percenters!

They never had any pull. They always catered to a dull necessity. The ITIs also had the irony of being made up of the same letters as the IITs. And this irony hit hard as their fortunes couldn't be more unlike than that of the premiere tech colleges: an ITI, or Industrial Training Institute, was for someone who seemed to have just run out of choices. But in a recent trend, a seat in an ITIBSE -1.12 % is now hotly contested, says an Economic Times report.

Mad rush

Stating that candidates, high scorers from even the 90% club are also applying to join it is, the report goes on to say that ironically, admission is even open to students who fail in class X. But the population of those is reducing every year. Data shows that the top scorers who traditionally did not even consider joining an ITI are now aspiring to join them. Last year, about 2,000 who scored more than 80% in class X joined an ITI, noted the report.
Though, majority of those candidates who sign up for ITI were from the 50%-60% bracket, each passing year is seeing new playing out, says the report.
While quoting Deepak Kapoor, Principal Secretary of the Skills Department, and Government of Maharashtra as saying the report said, “Each factory plant needs workmen in large number who are dedicated and bring value to their job. Placements for such students are assured. Hence even students with outstanding marks are getting into it is.” The Apprentice Act ensures that initial jobs for ITI students are assured after passing out, the report pointed out.

Contrast

Contrast this against the joblessness among engineering pass outs and the choice for many is clear says the report. Citing a Team lease study titled: `Professional education versus vocational skilling: What pays better' the report said that salary levels of electricians were on a par with accountants in 2013 and 2015. “(Also) across most sectors that hire engineers - automotive, construction, food processing, healthcare, retail -specific blue-collar job profiles are paid 10-27% higher than engineering jobs.“

Career option

“The ITI needle has shifted over time. From being a last resort, it is today a career option,“ said a senior officer from the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET) of Maharashtra government. The curriculum has altered, courses have been modernized and placements are in full swing, Kapoor said and added: “Today, industry looks at ITIs as a source of ready-made employees, not cheap labour.“

Optimum capacity

Over the last few years, some trades have recorded full capacity: electrician, architectural draughtsman, furniture and cabinet maker, surveyor, and fitter. Across 417 government and 496 private institutes in Maharashtra, there is an overall increase in demand for ITI courses, added the report.
