NID offers M.Des Programme in Transportation and Automobile Design

The National Institute of Design (NID) offers M.Des programme in transportation and automobile design. This programme aims to develop highly creative individuals to resolve the prevailing/future challenges around ‘mobility’, through imparting relevant skills and knowledge.

Process centric in nature, this programme has a strong emphasis on environmental, socio-economic and cultural aspects of transportation. With a learning curve that sets off with understanding automobiles (aesthetics (exterior/interior), human factors/ vehicle packaging, display and controls etc.) at product level, it escalates to tackle the broader aspects and complexities around personal/public transportation, at system and service levels, through specific design projects.

The multi-disciplinary learning environment is complimented by cutting edge design development/support facilities (computer lab equipped with latest hardware/software for concept ideations, presentation renderings, and 3- modelling. High Performance Visualization Lab for real-time 3D visualization of products. Rapid Product Development Lab equipped with Rapid Prototyping, Laser scanner and Laser cutting machines) to help the students conceive, ideate and eventually communicate their design ideas in the best possible manner.

Highlight

The highlight of the programme is to collaborate with the industry for live projects/workshops as a part of the curriculum, to give a ‘head start’ for the students to work as professional designers and also to improve networking with the industry from an early stage. The programme has produced creative talents to join the transportation/automobile industry in India as well as some of the leading design studios abroad, besides successful entrepreneurs. There are 15 seats available for this programme.

The National Institute of Design (NID) functions as an autonomous body under the department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
NID has been a pioneer in industrial design education after Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany and is known for its pursuit of design excellence to make Designed in India, Made for the World a reality. NID's graduates have made a mark in key sectors of commerce, industry and social development by taking role of catalysts and through thought leadership.

NID Gandhinagar is situated in Gujarat and as part of expansion plan a new postgraduate campus is also coming up consisting of a jewellery and automobile design centre along with lifestyle accessory design, new media design, toy and game design, strategic design management, transportation and information design centres.

R&D

The R&D Centre at Bangalore, which came up in March 2006, is a joint initiative of funding from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India.  The Centre offers two research-intensive PG Programmes, Design for Retail Experience and Design for Digital Experience, from the academic year 2007-2008. Currently five Master's programmes are offered from this campus. NID's Research & Development Campus addresses the immediate need for an exclusive Design Research centre in the country, by fostering the creative design spirit and sighting new opportunities and frontiers through NID's design acumen nurtured over the four decades of intense teaching-learning process.
All NID campuses are open to visitors throughout the year from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM, Monday to Friday (apart from public holidays). For further details, visit http://www.nid.edu/index.html.
