According to media reports, the Trump administration is likely to take action on the conservatives’ long pending issue of intentional race-based discrimination in admissions. Quoting NYT, the Chronicle said recently that the US Department of Justice (DoP) has contemplated on probing intentional race-based discrimination in admissions. Richard D. Kahlenberg, senior fellow at the Century Foundation who argues for affirmative action based on class rather than race, told The Chronicle, "The system is rigged against disadvantaged students, and legacy preferences are the most blatant example. Questions about Legacies Many selective public universities and private colleges have long considered an applicant’s legacy status as one of many factors in admission, says the report and adds, “Yet legacy c...

Is the statement Scottish Education the Best a Misnomer?

Image
The Isle of Lewis in the UK is considered as a metaphor for Scotland’s best education system in the world, as it brought humongous  Results . But did such a golden age ever really exist, asks Brian Wilson on  Scotsman . com . Anxiety about the current state of Scottish education rests mainly upon statistics and comparators which show us drifting downwards in both absolute and relative terms. However, there is also an underlying narrative which adds an extra dimension, according to the report. National Pride Discussion of where we now stand is often prefixed by assertions like: “Scotland used to have the best education system in world”, he writes. Whether we ever did is entirely un-provable. Certainly, there were national pride in our education system and a deeply-held belief in its democratic ability to transform the prospects of the poor and send them on their way to great callings in life, Wilson writes. Erosion of Values It is the sense that this distinguishing ...

Instead, they expect to be fully engaged and to be a part of the learning process themselves, according to a  forbes . com  report. Gen Z Students In fact, Gen Z students tend to thrive when they are given the opportunity to have a fully immersive educational experience and they even enjoy the challenges of being a part of it, says the report. These same students also mentioned they tend to enjoy class discussions and interactive classroom environments over the traditional dissemination teaching method, noted the report. Public Spending for Health and Education Should Go Up

Image
There is a lot of encouragement for privatization, especially in the health care sector. However, a recent survey done shows different results. It indicates that more public spending needs to happen in social sectors with education and health being the two main areas. These two areas are vital for an economy to develop. India has had a target for increasing the spending in both health and education . However the target has remained just a target.   The expenditure has stayed the same or even reduced in some cases. Though more and more children are getting admitted to school as a result of initiatives undertaken by the government, the learning outcomes have not correspondingly increased. Teachers’ salaries, scholarships for students, and other benefits need to be made through direct transfer so that all the funds reach the right places that they are intended for and act as motivation and engage people in the right way.   Rate of School Dropouts ...
